FASHION IS ENCOURAGING CONSUMERS TO TAKE BETTER CARE OF THEIR CLOTHES

The notion of clothes for life is not new in luxury: pieces that last are the opposite of disposable fashion. But in recent times, this concept has expanded, with luxury fashion houses like Brunello Cucinelli and Hermès actively offering repairs, and a new generation of contemporary brands adopting a model of timeless products that could be repaired. Patagonia, Nudie Jeans, Raeburn, Barbour and Levi’s are some of the names who are incorporating repair services.

Platforms like The Restory partnership with Farfetch while Fixing Fashion are removing the stigma of wearing mended garments, by giving sustainability advice and infusing creativity in visible mending: the popular stitch technique of sashiko being an example.

DESIGNER STORY

Simon Goldman

New York City, USA

Many might have come across Simon Goldman’s garments for the first time on TikTok. The young fashion designer is using the app to share his creative process with a strong community of 134k followers. Goldman’s passion for fashion design started mid-year through high school–when he started attending fashion construction classes–and he’s now splitting his time between fashion school and his studio in New York City. Inspired by workwear and military uniforms of the early 1900s to the 60s, Simon Goldman’s garments are meant to be worn everyday and by everyone. His latest collection sold out in a day and appealed to fashion enthusiasts aged 16 to 45 years old. While fashion history and research are critical, sourcing the right fabrics is definitely key to his process. His recent collection included a garment that was made out entirely of recycled fishing net.

CREATIVE VOICES

“Creating garments that can be worn forever and gain character with wear is one of the essential parts of my design process. Sourcing the best textiles available is a process that takes much longer than running into any fabric store but makes all the difference. I love to create using vintage deadstock fabric for my work because there are thousands of warehouses worldwide with untouched fabrics that need a new life. I also work directly with fabric mills and make sure to learn about each step of the production of the fabric I am using, from its weaving to how it gets to my door.”
