FASHION DESIGNERS ARE CREATIVELY REPURPOSING STYLES FROM THE PAST

Vintage fashion is getting creative thanks to a group of designers who rework antique pieces and old fabrics. Some of the most exciting emerging designers share this waste-free ethos, which has resonated with fashion lovers all over the world. Marine Serre, a self defined ‘eco-futurist’ who has dressed Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Kendall Jenner, Lorde, Rosalía and A$AP Rocky, uses second hand, dead stock and recycled materials. While Emily Bode, who loves antique fabrics and repurposing pieces with history, is one of Harry’s Styles’ favourite brands. Kevin Germanier, on the other hand, explores a sustainable take on partywear, repurposing discarded or forgotten materials for his highly glam pieces.

DESIGNER STORY

Lafaille

Montreal, Canada

Lafaille was created in 2017 and was at first a way to experiment with upcycled garments and find ways to reprocess them. Since that time, Lafaille grew as a brand and defined its unique identity and aesthetic to stand out in the saturated market. Vintage garments were always a matter of interest for the designer because of their positive ecological impact and uniqueness. The brand now works with both upcycled and new fabrics, with vintage designs as a source of inspiration, ideas and new shapes. The designer finds and deconstructs vintage garments, then figures out the steps to transform and reprocess them, and decides if the items would be upcycled or become a prototype produced with new materials. Then the majority of the clothes are made ethically and locally in Montreal.

CREATIVE VOICES

“The driving force behind the ethos is the tension of transformation. We aim to deconstruct and rethink how we present ourselves to the world and to create for those who might have grown up on the margins. Also, Lafaille’s upcycled line main goal is to salvage garment wastes and ethically repurpose them.”

— Benjamin Lafaille, Founder and Creative Director, Lafaille
