Skinny vs Wide leg: TikTok’s latest controversy among Millennials and Gen Z has got fashion lovers searching for denim even more. Over the past 3 months, wide leg and boyfriend styles have been growing at a faster pace – they’re up 148% compared to the same period last year. Some of the most popular brands include Kut from the Kloth, Vetements and H&M. Moreover, looking at the past quarter, year-on-year straight leg jeans also remain an enduring classic shape with searches up 145%.
Despite the fast growth of looser styles, interest in skinny jeans hasn’t decreased: looking at the same time frame searches are up 107%. Some of the most searched brands are Amiri, especially distressed styles, ASOS (lift and contour jeans) and Levi’s 501 skinny jeans.
Distressed: Distressed denim is having a moment, with searches for the style growing 91% month-on-month. Ripped jeans with cut-outs details around the knees, in particular, are seeing the highest demand – page views for the style are up 37% week-on-week. Whilst baggy boyfriend and straight leg cuts are the most popular when searching for distressed denim, demand for “ripped skinny jeans” is also growing quickly (+50%) since February.
Slit-hem: Worn by Hailey Bieber and Katie Holmes, split-hem jeans are amongst the hottest denim trends for spring. Searches for jeans including the terms “split-hem” and “split-leg” increased collectively 40% over the past 3 months. Most popular pieces include Reformation’s Peyton slit-hem bootcut jeans and Paige’s black split-hem flared jeans.
Patchwork: Searches for patchwork jeans reached an all-time high in January and over the last three months have increased by 200%. More specifically, searches for straight leg patchwork jeans are up 44% while searches for wide-leg patchwork jeans are up 51%. At the same time, the term “bandana patchwork jeans” is also trending in searches (+63%). The most wanted brands for this denim style include Jaded London, Etro, Amiri, and Dolce & Gabbana.
Conscious: Conscious denim is receiving growing attention. Searches for jeans including sustainability-related keywords have spiked 138% in the past 3 months. In particular, page views for “recycled” and “organic” denim have increased 229% and 119% respectively. Shopper’s current favorite are &Other Stories’ organic cotton high waist flare jeans. Meanwhile, page views for pre-owned jeans have also risen 68% in the past 3 months.
Colors & Shades:
Gray denim: Searches for grey jeans have gone up 121% in the past 3 months, with &Other Stories, DSquared, Emporio Armani, Amiri and Off-White as some of the most wanted brands.
White jeans for men: This season white jeans have become a staple also in men’s wardrobes. This style has grown 142% in the last 3 months, compared with the same period last year. Levi’s and Dior are some of the labels which include these items in men collections.
Light washed: Looking at shades, searches for “light washed” denim pieces increased 53% over the past month, whilst searches for “faded jeans” jumped 49% with blue, grey and black the most sought-after colors. Trending searches include “straight washed-blue jeans”, “light-washed baggy jeans” and “night-washed denim jackets”.
