At a time where we’re reaching peak 90s nostalgia, some of our favorite old-school fashion choices are making a comeback - the latest being the lace-up jean. Jonathan Simkhai’s ‘Stovepipe’ pair, cut to a slim leg and finished with corset-inspired lacing, are selling out worldwide, propelling the jeans into the world’s hottest products list.
Designer Jonathan Simkhai has been a regular on the fashion and red carpet scene since winning the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2015. Known for his romantic-meets-real style, his collections are characterised by a playful use of fabrics and clean, minimalist lines interspersed with romantic details. From figure-skimming cocktail dresses to flirty separates with a tailored edge, each piece is worked with a playful, peekaboo theme, with some of Simkhai’s most-wanted pieces being these 90s-style lace-up jeans, asymmetric-cut blouses and jackets with stapled slits. Simkhai has dressed Gigi Hadid, Alicia Vikander, Blake Lively and many more, and recently celebrated the opening of a new flagship store in LA with the support of most of Hollywood’s It girls.
Unlike rigid, curve-hugging mom jeans, corset-inspired jeans are meant to be skin tight but flexible. This Jonathan Simkhai pair contains a touch of stretch and is meant to sit comfortably on your waist - so not only are they chic, but they’re actually comfortable, too. Finished with raw-edge distressing and sun-washed fading, follow Gigi Hadid’s lead and choose the all-black design or go full 90s and pick the acid-washed blue pair.
