When it comes to discovering new brands, the pool of options can feel more like an ocean. An ever-changing, glittering horizon of choice and curiosity. Where does one start? How do we know if it fits the bill? Does it align with our personal style? Yes, the ocean of choice can certainly feel overwhelming — especially online. When we're not able to touch, feel, or see with our own eyes, we need another way to make sense of a brand at a glance. Enter perfumery.

Scent is the most evocative of the senses, and the language built around it — top, heart, base notes — has always been a way of describing something intangible in terms you can instantly picture and compare. A well-written scent description can sell a perfume sight and smell unseen, because it tells you exactly what you're getting before you commit — and the same could be said for brands. If you were to understand the key components that make up a brand’s style, you could hazard a pretty refined guess as to whether they would align with your own, even if you’d never heard of them before. Welcome to Brand Notes.

THE KEY TO BRAND NOTES

To get your head into the world of Brand Notes, we must imagine ourselves at the proverbial perfume counter of fashion. Using Lyst Intelligence (the Lyst Nose if you will) we have identified the key styling notes that feature in each brand, as well as the Top, Heart, Base and Data notes that make up the brand identity as a whole. Sample one, or sample them all, to find your perfect match.

This edition of Brand Notes happens to fall in a particularly notable time of year: fashion month. Those with their eyes and ears truly on the ground know – who better to look to for this season’s it-girl brands than the editors, aka, the ones calling the sartorial shots behind the scenes. Historically heralding in new waves of names, these bastions of emerging brands know how to stand out in a sea of style whilst staying cool and comfortable amongst the chaos. Favouring brands with a certain cultural pedigree over mainstream labels, the off-duty editor exudes an effortless sense of play meets put together.

This Brand Notes edition will explore 4 brands deemed off-duty editor approved; COMPLETEDWORKS, Sélone, RACIL and La Fetiche. Sample one, or sample them all, to find your perfect match.

SÉLONE

TOP NOTE

Liquid like drapery meets sculptural tailoring, with a sprinkle of the unexpected. Prices range from £150-£400.

HEART NOTE

Fresh on the scene, Sélone delivers an equally fresh take on tailoring, with its collection debuting deconstructed blazers and corsets set against open back dresses and balloon skirts. Whilst still in its early blossoming stage, this new London label is set on exploring the rich intersections between cultures, cities and identities.

BASE NOTE

Set to be a brand to watch, Sélone has already picked up hype across social media through an ever growing fanbase of those in the know, not to mention their ‘Her World’ campaign spotlighting women who shape culture through their creative practices. Hot off the press, the brand just debuted into society this September at their London pop-up.

DATA NOTE

We use our Lyst Nose to detect which notes make up the anatomy of a brand. In this case we saw that 80% of demand for Sélone was for white, natural, black, brown. Thus filing it with the brand note ‘Tonal Neutrals’.

RACIL

TOP NOTE

The modern girl’s answer to ‘Le Smokings’ (the revolutionary 1966 women's tuxedo suit introduced by Yves Saint Laurent). Intentional, elevated separates and sharp suiting, exuding feminine sophistication with a masculine edge. Prices range from £250-£700.

HEART NOTE

London based brand RACIL has been making ripples in the tailoring world since it was founded in 2015 by Beirut born designer Racil Chalhoub. Launching her debut collection at Paris fashion week with a sensational 20 piece exploration entirely of ‘Le Smokings’, she quickly established her presence as ‘the tuxedo brand’. Since then RACIL has continued to explore a playful take on modern tailoring and beyond, fusing Savile row quality materials with Parisian tailoring and Lebanese design sensibility.

BASE NOTE

Counting industry insiders Leandra Medine (Man Repeller) and Camille Charrière as fans, RACIL hits that sweet spot of style credibility and undeniable quality. A decade in, RACIL has carved out a distinct place in the tailoring world. With that firmly under her belt, and landing notable stockists Matches Fashion, Selfridges, Browns, and Farfetch early on in its journey, RACIL has turned its attention to an exploration of informal ready to wear pieces with that original sharp, structured, playful identity.

DATA NOTE

One product stood out for RACIL, so much so that it has completely sold out. With 69% of purchase demand for the brand being their houndstooth wide-leg trousers, the people cry - bring them back!

LA FETICHE

TOP NOTE

Artisanal knitwear spun through an exuberant lens. Classic crew necks and bretons are treated to a playful reimagining in the candy coloured world of La Fetiche. Prices range from £200 - £575

HEART NOTE

Whilst working together at Sonia Rykiel in Paris, designer partners April Crichton and Orély Forestier decided it was time to take threads into their own hands. Founding La Fetiche in 2015, the Franco-Scottish pair literally and figuratively weave their dual cultural references into their designs. When French chic meets British eccentricity, what looms on the other side? An undeniable sense of fun and handcrafted quality.

BASE NOTE

Debuting at Dover Street Market with a 37 piece collection, each piece took its name from the founders’ favourite female muses, establishing early on their connection and insider art-world positioning. Once again hitting that note of, if you know, you know, La Fetiche is a brand favoured by creative and cultural figures over mainstream celebrity. Niche but notable.

DATA NOTE

Certainly tapping into the current cultural demand for craftsmanship, Lyst data shows that searches for La Fetiche include a 57% search demand in artisanal knitwear.
