If there's one thing worth paying attention to, it's the composition label, but don't stop there. Yes, natural fibers like linen, cotton and silk consistently rise to the top of our shopping lists every summer because they breathe, regulate temperature naturally and move with your body instead of clinging to it.

But composition is only half the story.

The weight and construction of a fabric matter just as much, especially in an office setting. An ultra-thin linen shirt might feel wonderfully breezy on vacation, but it can quickly become too sheer under fluorescent office lights. Likewise, a gauzy white cotton dress may be perfect for the beach, but less so for the boardroom.

Instead, look for fabrics with a little substance. Crisp cotton poplin, washed linen with a slightly heavier weave, silk crepe rather than delicate satin, or a structured linen blend all offer the breathability of natural fibers while maintaining enough opacity and shape to feel polished.

The goal isn't simply to stay cool.

It's to stay cool while looking like you meant to wear exactly what you have on.

There's a difference between dressing for the heat and dressing for the beach.

The office still calls for a certain level of polish, even when temperatures soar. That usually means saving tiny shorts, crochet cover-ups, visible swimwear and ultra-casual flip-flops for the weekend.

Instead, think tailored shorts with a crisp shirt. A sleeveless midi dress rather than a strappy mini. Wide-leg linen trousers instead of cut-offs.

The goal isn't to hide your body. It's to make your outfit feel intentional. Interestingly, showing less skin often looks—and feels—cooler.

One styling trick I come back to every summer is balancing proportions.

If I'm showing my shoulders, I'll usually cover my legs. If I'm wearing tailored shorts, I'll pair them with an oversized shirt or lightweight blazer. If I'm wearing wide-leg linen trousers, I'll keep the top more fitted.

It's the same principle that applies year-round, just translated for warmer weather. The result feels polished rather than overly exposed.

If there's one place to embrace summer, it's your footwear.

This is the season for leather sandals, elegant slides, woven loafers and breathable ballet flats. The key word being elegant. Office sandals should still feel like shoes rather than something you'd wear around a hotel pool. Minimal leather styles, fisherman sandals and refined flip-flops (if your workplace is particularly relaxed) all strike the right note.

And if open toes aren't your thing, woven leather or mesh flats offer the same breathability without the commitment.

No one talks enough about underwear during a heatwave.

Linen can become unexpectedly sheer in bright sunlight. Silk likes to cling. White trousers have a habit of surprising you the moment you step outside.

This is the season for seamless underwear in a tone close to your own skin—not white, despite what instinct tells you. A lightweight bra, smoothing shorts beneath dresses and breathable natural fibers make far more difference than anyone else will ever know.

Which is exactly the point.

Summer bags are surprisingly powerful.

A basket bag instantly relaxes an outfit. A structured leather tote instantly smartens it up. The trick is knowing when to use each.

If you're wearing a sharply tailored linen suit or a polished poplin dress, a woven raffia tote can soften the look beautifully without making it feel like you're on vacation. But if you've already embraced a more casual silhouette—tailored shorts, sandals and an oversized shirt, for example—a structured leather bag helps bring everything back into office territory.

Think of your bag as the piece that keeps the outfit anchored. It's often the difference between "summer in the city" and "heading to the beach."
