Nancy and Walter Katin opened a small boat cover business called Kanvas by Katin in 1954 in Surfside, California. But their business changed just a few years later when a teenager walked into the shop and asked for a custom-made pair of shorts. Corky Carroll, who would go on to be one of the first professional surfers, wanted something more durable, that wouldn’t rip or unravel while he was riding waves. And that’s what Nancy and Walter gave him. And many many more after him.
