As cotton lacks natural anti-bacterial and odor-resistant properties, it requires more frequent washing. Cotton can sometimes be prone to shrinking when it is washed and dried, and to prevent this happening it is recommended to use water that is 30°C or below, either by hand or in the washing machine. Colored cotton garments should be turned inside out before washing. Allow to air dry naturally, and give garments a gentle stretch to restore shapes as soon as they come out of the wash.
Silk has long been associated with luxury, and while it is a delicate fabric, taking care of it doesn’t need to be difficult. Before attempting to clean your silk item, we recommend checking the care label for instructions as some silk is dry clean only, and others are washable. Some silk products are strictly dry clean only, while others can be hand washed or machine washed on a gentle, cold-water cycle. If you do decide to hand wash silk, always use lukewarm water and a specific, mild detergent in order to protect the silk’s natural properties. Avoid spot cleaning silk, as rubbing in only one area can cause the material to lighten in just that spot. Silk should not be tumble dried, and instead can be laid flat to dry naturally. If you must wash in the machine, select a gentle, cold-water cycle, place in a laundry bag for additional protection and promptly remove from the washer to reduce any wrinkles. If the care label on your silk item says that it can be ironed, then use a low iron setting and ideally iron while it is still slightly damp.
Wool is a soft, natural fiber that can be prone to shrinking if not cared for properly. The best way to care for wool will vary depending on the type of garment that requires cleaning. Most wool is washable, with the main exception of structured pieces like suits, jackets and blazers, which are best spot cleaned. Some wool is suitable for machine washing, once it has been turned inside out and put on a 30°C gentle cycle. To prevent shrinkage, it is advised to soak your garment in cold water before placing it in the machine. The heat from the tumble dryer can also shrink your garment, so it is best to lay wool flat and allow to air dry away from sunlight and radiators. Ensure wool garments are clean before storing folded in a cool, dark place.
