Does The Future Of Sustainable Fashion Lie In Downloadable Products?
It’s no secret that the fashion industry has a huge sustainability problem. From fast fashion cycles that create an excess amount of stock which turns into waste to the harmful chemicals used in manufacturing processes, the way in which we design, make and consume products ultimately needs to change.
One brand that is rethinking the way we shop is Solve. A Danish fashion brand, Solve has just launched a downloadable collection of handbags that consumers can create with pre-owned materials.
The S Bags collection is available to anyone who has access to a laser cutter, which may seem off-putting and unrealistic at first, but a purchase of a laser cutter costs roughly $11, making it a cheap and easy investment. Solve then recommends that assembly times range from 10 to 20 minutes and assure that even the least “hands-on” types will be able to work out instructions.
A cheap and easy method of production and a business model that is unique to the industry, Solve is one of the first brands to be giving consumers an opportunity to exert their own creativity through a brands products. It also not only a way of exploring how to create garments digitally, but they are streamlining the production process and cutting waste by creating only what is necessary.
The digital-first collection includes the Curved S-bag, the Circular S-bag and the Block S-bag. Patterns for each design can be downloaded and made from a range of fabrics, such as cork leather and recycled polyester felt, which are both recommended by the brand.
According to Solve, the downloadable concept blends technology and design to provide consumers with access to quality fashion items, while promoting sustainable practices. While we certainly have a long way to go, more and more brands are beginning to explore sustainable processes when it comes to making clothes and accessories. Though the future of fashion may not certainly look bright, it is beginning to look green.
