Ariana Grande Wore 1 of the Most Talked About Dresses of the Grammys — and She Wasn’t Even There
When it comes to red carpet fashion, the Oscars might be the most glamorous night, but the Grammy Awards certainly aren’t far behind. On Sunday night, some of the music industry’s biggest and brightest stars stepped out in LA to celebrate this year’s big winners, and some of the outfits arguably deserved an award of their own.
While Lady Gaga stunned in Celine by Hedi Slimane and Cardi B’s Ursula-inspired gown almost immediately became a meme, one of the most popular dresses of the night came courtesy of Ariana Grande, despite the fact that she spent the night at home. Ahead, see the five looks that got everyone talking.
1. Lady Gaga
On Sunday night, Lady Gaga chose to skip the BAFTA’s red carpet in order to attend the Grammy Awards, and the A Star Is Born actress dazzled in a Celine by Hedi Slimane sequin dress, which she accessorised with over 100 carat of Tiffany & Co. jewels and Jimmy Choo heels.
In less than 24 hours, Gaga and her sparkling gown were responsible for over 514K social mentions. Could it finally be the boost Celine needs to make people move on from Old Céline?
2. Cardi B
The award for the most-talked-about-look might have gone to Lady Gaga, but the one for the most meme-able dress went to Cardi B thanks to her vintage Mugler Couture gown from 1995.
Immediately compared to The Little Mermaid‘s Ursula, her ensemble was mentioned over 363,000 times on social media in less than a day, with online searches for Mugler going up more 669% in four hours.
3. Ariana Grande
Despite pulling out of the show and skipping the event altogether, Ariana Grande was the third most talked about celebrity during and after the Grammy Awards. Halfway through the event, the “Thank U, Next” singer shared four photos and a video of herself wearing the custom made Zac Posen gown that would have been her red carpet outfit.
Of course, it didn’t take long for Grande’s Cinderella-esque gown to create social buzz, quickly racking up over 207K social mentions and nine million likes on Instagram. And in the hour following the publication of the singer’s photos on social media, online searches for Zac Posen went up 400%.
4. Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama might have skipped the red carpet, but her surprise appearance on stage made her the fourth most talked about celebrity of the night.
The former FLOTUS joined Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Lady Gaga to open the show and discuss how music has influenced her life, wearing a glittery jumpsuit that made over 194K people talk.
5. Miley Cyrus
For the event, newlywed Miley Cyrus kept things relatively simple in a black trouser suit by Mugler. With oversized shoulders and a plunging neckline, the singer’s ensemble was mentioned over 149,000 times on social media, proving that the appetite for the pantsuit trend isn’t slowing down. In fact, online searches for suits were up an impressive 202% on Lyst in January alone.
Special Mention: Dua Lipa
The British singer always is one to watch on the red carpet, and the floor-sweeping gown she wore to the 2019 Grammy Awards got over 109,200 people talking.
