Olsen-philes, rejoice! You can now buy Mary Kate Olsen’s iconic mint green Balenciaga City bag — and if that’s not quite the right colour for you, it also comes in citrus, lilac, silver, blue, black and white.
Logo-less and slouchy with metallic hardware, the off-duty bag — which was first called Motorcycle — was created in the early naughts by then-creative director Nicolas Ghesquière. First met with mixed reactions, it wasn’t until the accessory landed in the arms of Kate Moss that it became synonymous with the Y2K era and cool-girl aesthetic; and it subsequently appeared on everyone’s elbow, from Nicole Richie to Kim Kardashian.

Fast-forward to 2024, Le City is making a comeback as a reconstituted classic, which echoes the circa-2001 reference almost exactly. To create this new version, which has been improved upon in terms of sustainable production, several archival City styles have been studied and remodelled, effecting an amalgamation of the original’s accumulated attitudes; the bag’s hand-assembled, 25-panel construction replicates vintage versions, using the same dimensions of exterior and interior layers.
Despite releasing the Le Cagole in 2021 — an updated version of the original design with leather-strung zipper pulls and rivets — the City has remained one of the most sought-after bags among vintage resellers, proving its value. With shoppers constantly inspired by the early ‘00s style of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, the bag continues to have an impact, with searches on Lyst up 7% month-on-month.
And in an almost full-circle moment, Kate Moss was recently spotted wearing the black version of the Le City bag in London — just in case you weren’t already convinced by the bag’s history.
