FABRICS AND MATERIALS ARE LEADING FASHION’S INNOVATION

A big part of innovative fashion is now created in a lab. Science is helping brands to be more sustainable through the development of new materials, often coming from the natural world. Pangaia is an example of a successful fashion company making space for constant experimentation. The brand uses a down-like material made with wildflowers, treats its products with a peppermint leaf oil to reduce washing and uses a fabric made of eucalyptus pulp and seaweed powder instead of cotton.

Luxury brands are also taking note of the demands of an increasingly eco-conscious and knowledgeable customer, who reads clothing labels carefully. Stella McCartney and Hermès are introducing mushroom leather in their collections, and Salvatore Ferragamo has created a capsule collection using orange fiber. As customers demand vegan and non plastic alternatives, this industry is growing fast, with a series of companies manufacturing materials from fruit to potatoes or coffee. At Lyst we noticed that the offer of products made from fruit based materials like Pinatex (pineapple), Vegea (grape) and orange fiber have consistently grown this year.

DESIGNER STORY

Rombaut

Paris, France

Founded in 2013, this vegan accessory brand uses plant-based materials, recycled fibers and high grade artificial leather to create unique sneaker styles with a story. The design process is based around the research of new materials and experimenting with them: products have been manufactured with apple leather -using the cores and skins discarded from the industrial food industry-, algae blended resin, materials made of leaves and palm trees, cactus leather, as well as other recycled fabrics produced from post-consumer waste. Rombaut ethos is to apply strong ethics, but never compromises on design, which is always bold and intriguing. The brand recently opened its first store and gallery space in Paris.

CREATIVE VOICES

“Design is a challenge, it’s about finding solutions: both aesthetic and scientific. Rombaut’s goal and ethos is to make eco-conscious shoes look hot and futuristic. We experiment with unexpected materials like mushroom leather, something we’ve worked with in the past and also coming soon. The product I am most proud of is the biodegradable shoes we made from natural latex-coated tree bark and the ‘closed loop’ sneakers in collaboration with Melissa, which were made out of 100% worn out plastic shoes.”
