Over the past months, many streetwear brands have consciously moved away from overconsumption and hype to give back to their communities as well as implement more sustainable practices, like slower drops, repairs on offer and eco-friendly materials. Interest in collaborations is slowing down with demand for sneaker collaborations growing just 30% YoY in 2021 as opposed to 60% YoY in 2020. Also, the commercial success of sneakers with a smaller environmental footprint – like Nike’s Space Hippie created of recycled materials like plastic bottles, t-shirts and post-industrial scraps, and Adidas Yeezy Foam Runner, made of algae – shows that streetwear lovers are demanding a structural change.
