I can't hike at all, but I do have to walk (or run) across my huge college campus carrying my heavy books, laptop, etcetera. With the Surge backpack I have the best possible weight distribution and tons of extra space, with so many pockets and pouches that everything has its own tidy compartment. The lining is very protective and soft for electronics, which is a great bonus. The pack even looks very stylish and the materials are super durable (more so than previous models, even). This bag will last easily three times as long as my last bags, which have literally torn apart, so the price is way worth it. Your back will thank you. I took this through France, Italy, and Greece. It got dirty and when I got home, it cleaned up beautifully! It has a nice fit, is easy to adjust, and has decent organization. The big negative for me is that it falls over forward when you set it down. Otherwise I would give it 5 stars! I love the front sleeve that held not only my Kindle, but also my iPad 2 (old school! This is the pocket in the front organization pocket. There's also the laptop pocket, but I used it for separating out paperwork. One other negative is the depth of the water bottle pockets. You need to carbiner clip it in if you use a 24 oz. Or larger bottle (mine was a Klean Kanteen). I did get a lot of compliments on it! I am a college student and I use it daily for classes and what not. Honestly, I think that this backpack is not big enough. The pocket for the laptop sleeve is GREAT! The only thing about that pocket is that if your laptop is in that pocket then there isn't room for anything else in this pocket. The second pocket is great size and can fit a lot. As long as you don't put anything in the back pocket or the very front. All the pockets seem to run into each other and take up space in another area. You can't really fit much into the backpack. Poor design. I've never had a "women's" backpack before and I wasn't really sure that I'd be able to tell the difference. Now, I'm convinced! It's just simply more comfortable than my old unisex North Face backpack. That backpack is actually still in really good shape and I'll probably pass it on to my husband or brother but I saw some of these great colors and felt like it was time for something new. This particular pack is big without being bulky. The padded and lined compartments are perfect for my laptop and other random things. So far it's awesome. I bought this backpack for college and from the look of it it will last me all four years. My college is huge and i plan to put my life into this backpack so that i can be mobile with all of my important things in one spot. I really like the 2 water bottle pockets because i am ALWAYS spilling my water in my bag and this is a good way to prevent that. The bag is doubling as a computer case for me and the heavy padding on the bag will keep my computer safe and my back feeling comfortable. When i am not using the bag for school i know it will be amazing for any adventure like hiking camping or biking because of the straps and lightweight design. The colors are beautiful ( i got surf green and grey ). I would reccommend this bag for any college student or adventurer. I am a law student and needed to upgrade my North Face Slingshot I had gifted to me back in approx 2008, it still functioned but had seen better days (used for high school and parts of college). I wanted a backpack that was just as large to fit my large textbooks and 3 inch binder. While this bag has many pockets to keep you organized, compartments are not very large. I was lead to believe from the website this was the largest bag available (with the exception of hiking bags). I do love the coloring, style and comfort, but it does not fulfill its needs as well as the older models in terms of fitting large bulky books. I don't like this backpack at all. I love North Face products. Today I thought I left my North Face raincoat in the airport and I almost cried. But this backpack is way smaller than it seems. I usually carry my computer, one single subject spiral notebook and my planner in my backpack. If I put a textbook in it, it looks so full it's ridiculous. People actually comment on it. I'm a premed student so I need something that can hold at least a textbook sometimes and this doesn't do it. Also my water bottles constantly fall out of the water bottle holders. The hip strap is so thin that it cuts into your hip. I was very disappointed with the new line of backpacks at the North Face. Sorry North Face Im sure you'll improve upon your products! This backpack is great! Not only is it cute, but very comfortable. There's plenty of padding for the laptop and also a spot for a tablet and phone pocket. Anything you might need for a day at school or professionally, there's a spot for it. It's also not too big/bulky. The size is just right for a computer, a couple books, and some notebooks. There's also extra spots to store miscellaneous items such as keys or glasses so you don't have to dig around in one of the bigger pockets to find them. If you like to stay organized and want enough room for all your needs but dont want a huge bulky backpack, this is the right backpack for you. Color: black
