History of Mens Karhu Shoes

Launched in Finland as a sports good brand in 1916, the Karhu brand first came to the attention of the general public at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics when the famous ‘Flying Finns’ athletes won five gold medals wearing Karhu spikes. Four years later at the Paris Summer Olympics, Finland’s Paavo Nurmi repeated the feat, winning another five gold medals in a pair of running spikes produced by Karhu. By the 1950s, Karhu were using a distinctive three-stripe logo in their branding which they decided to sell to a small unknown company called Adidas. The logo became one of the most iconic pieces of branding in the world, and Karhu famously let it go for the equivalent of a few dollars and a couple of bottles of whiskey! But Karhu were making their own innovative waves in the market by the 1970s, developing the first ever use of air cushioning and nylon in their sought-after running shoes, and more recently crafting new lines of sneakers based on their own ‘Fulcrum Technology’ which was invented in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä.

Famous people wearing Karhu Shoes

Perhaps one of the most surprising star names to regularly step out in Karhu sneakers is Kanye West. The world-conquering artist is usually seen out and about promoting his own brand of trainers that he designed in collaboration with Adidas, and it’s very unusual these days to see him wearing anything on his feet that doesn’t feature the famous 3-stripe Adidas logo. But it’s been refreshing to see Kanye snapped in sneakers crafted by Karhu, the original designers of that iconic logo.
