History of Mens Jimmy Choo Shoes

Born into a shoemaking family in Malaysia in 1948, Jimmy Choo should actually have been named Jimmy Chow but his name was mis-spelt on his birth certificate and he stuck with the quirky error. Jimmy’s father taught him the art of shoemaking, and by the age of 11, Jimmy had created his first pair of slippers. Moving to Britain as a young adult to launch his own footwear business, Choo’s first designs went under the name of ‘Lucky Shoes’ and were sold from an old converted hospital in Hackney. Following a huge spread on the designer’s work in Vogue magazine, the accessories editor Tamara Mellon saw potential to bring Choo’s daring and playful designs to a wider audience, eventually forming a partnership with him to launch the legendary Jimmy Choo label. Celebrity and royalty soon became fans of the sought-after shoes, with the late Princess Diana wearing them regularly on many official visits around the world. Jimmy Choo became a household name and picked up a wealth of honors from Malaysia and Britain including The Distinguished Order of Meritorious Service and Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Nowadays, Jimmy Choo has moved away from the corporate spotlight and returned to his small shoe shop roots, leaving his niece Sandra Choi to take the main brand into a new creative direction for the future.
