Saks Fifth Avenue
Few nouns are synonymous with taste and elegance, but Saks Fifth Avenue is one of those selected nouns. The visionary sophisticated men’s and women’s apparel department store is the brainchild of Horace Saks and Bernard Gimbel, two independent storeowners in New York City’s Herald Square just at the turn of the 20th century. In 1924 the two combined forces and opened one of the largest department stores in the neighborhood, which was unorthodox at the time due to being a largely residential district. Needless to say the venture paid off. From launching Estee Lauder’s cosmetic line in the 40’s to decorating the White House Christmas tree in 1969, Saks Fifth Avenue has been on the cusp of refined luxuriousness ever since it opened its doors. Today the store continues its reputation of retailing excellence across North America with its main stores and outlet locations. ▼
