The brand started by solely making travelling cases and trunks, and by 1888 these featured the now iconic brown checkered motif. It wasn’t until 1914 that the monogrammed ‘LV’ symbol was patented. By the sixties the brand was thriving, expanding into wallets, purses and bags including their legendary ‘Speedy’ model. 1987 saw the brand merge with Moët et Chandon and Hennessy forming the lucrative LVMH conglomerate. In 1997 Marc Jacobs was appointed Creative Director, introducing a ready-to-wear line to the Vuitton business. Jacobs successfully made the brand more fashion forward and relevant; recent collections have been extremely feminine, with full skirts, corseted bodies and a fifties styling aesthetic.
Marc Jacobs has developed the Louis Vuitton brand extensively, he continues to develop the traditional hallmarks of the brand whilst incorporating his own exuberant vision. The brand’s collaborations with artists such as Stephen Sprouse and Takashi Murakami have been hugely successful and added a contemporary touch to the legendary label.
