Comme Des Garçons
Headed up by the inimitable Rei Kawakubo, Japanese design label Comme des Garçons (French for "like boys”) was founded as a company in Japan in 1973. Since the debut show in Paris in 1981, where Comme made a splash with its predominant use of black and distressed fabrics, Kawakubo has continued to push the boundaries of fashion as each generation knows it - with bubble fabrics, outsize shapes and destroyed looks often prominent features. The success of Comme des Garçons shows that the avant-garde can be accessible, beautiful and commercially viable for lovers of fashion, and it is in demonstrating these things that Kawakubo is a pioneer of our time.▼
