Alexander McQueen

Acclaimed British fashion designer dropped out of school at sixteen to pursue a career in fashion, he soon became an apprentice on Saville Row which earned him the the reputation of one of the most accomplished tailors in contemporary fashion. Having graduated from Central St.Martins Alexander McQueen went on to work for Givenchy and consequently launched his own label in 2001. McQueen was quickly dubbed the ‘hooligan of British fashion’ as he created numerous controversial collections; he became known for his innovative, avant-garde shows that many described as being ‘beyond style and fashion’. The McQueen vision was famed for its darkly romantic style, often featuring skulls, intricate embellishments, sharp tailoring and dramatic styling. He went on to win ‘British Designer of the Year’ four times securing his place as one of Britain’s most treasured visionaries. His tragic death in February 2010 was a huge shock worldwide as the fashion world lost one of its greatest talents. In May 2010 Sarah Burton was named Creative Director of Alexander McQueen. Also a St.Martins graduate, she worked alongside McQueen for sixteen years and thus insticntively understands the late designers’ vision in continuing the brand. Her collections under the label have been met with rave reviews as she continues to create beautifully crafted couture-like garments.▼
